In 16 cows (8 in their second and 8 in their third lactation) the serum glucose and magnesium levels were highest on the day of calving, when the serum calcium and inorganic phosphorus levels were lower than those found at other times. As the milk yield increased there were decreases in the haematocrit and haemoglobin values and the serum glucose concentration and an increase in the total blood ketone values.
