Chemical characterization of soil organic matter in soils with different fertilizer histories was examined by Curie-point pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The results were: (1) pyrograms of each soil showed more than 90 peaks. The pyrolysis of a soil which had been treated with organic matter and fertilizer yielded more abundant decomposition products than the other soils; (2) cluster analysis correctly classified pyrograms as each group of soils.
