Chemostat reactors with starch as substrate were used to compare one- and 2-stage anaerobic digestion processes with respect to substrate degradation and bacterial populations. The 2-stage system was better able to cope with changes in pH as solids retention times were reduced than the one-stage system. Methane recovery rates were also higher at low retention times than in the one-stage system.
