Controlling nitrogen oxides

Controlling nitrogen oxides

Nitrogen ( 197): 27-36

Nitrogen oxides are emitted in the tail gas from nitric acid plants and are formed in any process that uses the oxidizing properties of nitric acid such as organic nitrations or oxidative leaching processes. However, the worst offender is combustion, especially under the high-temperature conditions produced by combustion of fossil fuels. These acid-forming nitrogen oxides are implicated in the formation of photochemical smog as well as of acid rain.
