Correlated responses in carcass traits to selection for improved growth rate and reduced backfat thickness in Landrace pigs
Landrace pigs were selected for 10 generations on the basis of an index for increased growth rate and decreased backfat thickness. Data on carcass traits from 141 entire and 136 castrated in the 10th generation were analysed. Selection increased daily gain by 19.47 g and decreased backfat thickness by 0.04 cm per generation. Selection also resulted in a reduction in carcass length, which was mainly due to reduction in the length of the forequarter.
