Development of Caryospora colubris (Apicomplexa: Eimeriidae) in the Syrian black snake Coluber jugularis L

Syrian black snakes (Coluber jugularis) collected in Israel were found to be passing oocysts identical in size and shape to Caryospora colubris. Attempts to experimentally infect laboratory mice with oocysts were unsuccessful. The endogenous developmental cycle of C. colubris is described from a Syrian black snake infected per os in the laboratory with oocysts obtained from natural infection. Meronts divided to 8 merozoites and microgamonts formed 18-25 microgametes.
