In field trials at Somotor in 1986 and 1988, winter wheat Viginta was grown in the open or in a rain shelter and irrigated at up to 4 growth stages to maintain various soil moisture contents. Av. irrigation doses ranged from 27.8 to 61.5 mm water and total water application from 55.6 to 390.0 mm annually. Av. grain yield of wheat in the rain shelter was 5.6 t/ha and in field conditions 6.6 t, and was 28-30% higher with irrigation than without.
