On a farm with about 20 cows and heifers and a history of problems at calving, the diet was based on home-grown feed (winter herbage, oats and peas) and pastures with commercial concentrate only for high-yielders. Mineral feed contained selenium 10 mg/kg. Owing to suspected Se deficiency this was increased to 20 mg/kg by addition of sodium selenite or Se yeast, so that total dietary Se was 0.15-0.17, instead of 0.08-0.10 mg/kg DM.
