The competitive effects of barley Albacete (subject to lodging) and Reinette (resistant to lodging) against wild oats (A. sterilis) present at 20 plants/msuperscript 2 increased with increasing sowing density. High sowing density (750 seeds/msuperscript 2) produced more barley spikes/msuperscript 2 and reduced wild oat seed production. At low sowing rates, Reinette was more competitive but at high rates Albacete smothered the weed by lodging.
