Differential effects of anionic forms of selected heavy metal salts in seed treatments on Helminthosporium infection of wheat seedlings

Wheat grains were soaked in chloride, sulfate and nitrate salts of mercury, copper, cadmium, barium, iron, zinc and nickel. Seedlings were subsequently spray inoculated with H. sativum and symptoms were assessed after 4 d. Symptoms, particularly lesion number, were reduced by 66-75% when seeds had been pretreated with all 3 zinc salts, chlorides and sulfates of mercury and barium, sulfate and nitrate of copper, chloride and nitrate of nickel, and ferric nitrate.
