Differential impact of tannic acid and pyrogallol on nutrition and reproduction of two co-existing pests, Heliothis armigera (Hubner) and Spodoptera litura (Fabricius) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae)

The importance of 2 resistant principles of cotton, tannic acid and pyrogallol, in the nutrition and reproduction of Heliothis armigera and Spodoptera litura was evaluated. When H. armigera was reared on a semisynthetic diet containing pyrogallol or tannic acid, food utilization efficiency, larval growth and larval survival were poor and pupal weight was low, especially on the diet containing tannic acid. These parameters were less affected in S. litura.
