Differential sensitivity of wheat varieties to physical and chemical mutagens

Differential sensitivity of wheat varieties to physical and chemical mutagens

Journal of the Assam Science Society 31(3): 48-50

Grain of 4 varieties was treated with gamma rays (40 kR), ethyl methanesulfonate (EMS; 0.6%) and sodium azide (SA; 2 mM). Differential sensitivity of the varieties and effectiveness of the mutagens were assessed in the M1. On the basis of chimaera frequency, EMS was a more effective mutagen than gamma -radiation, which was better than SA. Indeed, SA only induced chimaeras in C306. The frequency of chimaeras from EMS treatment ranged from 0.33% in C306 to 4.54% in WH147.
