Dynamics of the growth of halophilic bacteria in arid saline soils

Experiments were conducted with samples of sulfate solonchak (Turkmenia) and sodic solonchak (Armenia), from which strains of extremely halophilic archaebacteria had previously been isolated, by placing 2 g of air-dry soil in penicillin flasks, moistened to 25 or 50% of total field capacity, and preincubated for 5-7 days for 'revival'. Glucose (1%) or acetate (1%) was added to the soil samples after preincubation. Incubation was carried out for 30-40 d at 28-60 degrees C.
