Early importations of Pinus radiata to New Zealand and distribution in Canterbury to 1885: implications for the genetic makeup of Pinus radiata stocks. Part I

A genetic history of radiata pine (P. radiata) in New Zealand is outlined, through an examination of the evidence for seed sources in the 19th century. Low prices in a New Zealand nursery catalogue (dated early 1860s) suggest that local seed sources were available by that time. Radiata pine seed was, at first, only available from the UK; after the 1860s seed was increasingly introduced directly from California, USA.
