Ecological characteristics and productivity of artificial forest stands of the Mediterranean region

Ecological characteristics and productivity of artificial forest stands of the Mediterranean region

EUR Report ( EUR 10841): 53-68

Afforestation with native or exotic species is a valid option for the development of large mountainous and hilly regions in southern Italy. Relatively steep slopes, poor vegetation cover (about 5% forest) and intense erosion characterize these areas, formerly exploited for agricultural uses and at altitudes of 400 to 1400 m. Large reforestation programmes have been carried out in the last 30 yr, covering >360 000 ha overall.
