Fruit diameter showed a normal distribution in Tsugaru, Jonagold and Fuji in 1986, but its variance increased as the fruits developed. Natural fruit drop was 42.2% in Tsugaru and 37.0% in Jonagold and Fuji. In studies during 1985-88, spraying with carbaryl was shown to be most effective in thinning the fruit when fruit diameter reached 14.5 mm in Tsugaru, 14 mm in Jonagold and 6.7 mm in Fuji.
