Effect of estrogen on serum and tissue levels of copper and zinc

Effect of estrogen on serum and tissue levels of copper and zinc

Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology 258: 155-162

Groups of 20 female hooded Long-Evans rats weighing 250 to 300 g had by implantation 17 beta -estradiol 2.1 and cholesterol 4.0 mg or cholesterol only. They were killed 2 or 4 weeks later. Rats given estrogen showed an increase in serum copper and ceruloplasmin and in brain Cu and a decrease in Cu in liver. Kidney Cu was increased after 2 weeks but not after 4 weeks. Zinc in liver was decreased at 2 and 4 weeks.
