Effect of ethylene on the formation of phenolic compounds in a suspension culture of tea cells

A study on the biosynthesis of phenolic compounds in a suspension culture of tea plant cells is reported. The presence of Ethrel (2-chloroethyl phosphonic acid) at 4 x 10-5 M (representing ethylene) decreased the growth of the culture by 20% but increased the total content of phenols and of flavans (catechins + proanthocyanidins) by 90% and 75%, respectively. These compounds were produced most rapidly in the stationary growth phase of the culture.
