Effect of feeding dried subabul as a replacement of concentrate mixture in buffalo calves

Buffalo calves (6) of 12-14 months old, weighing 163-168 kg were divided into control group (fed 40% concentrate + wheat straw) and treated group (fed 40% subabul hay + 60% wheat straw on dry-matter basis). They were fed ad lib. for 45 days. In the first week, substantial increase in live-weight gain in both the groups, was recorded. After this until the 45th day of feeding subabul fed animals showed decreased gain in body weight as compared to an increased gain in the control group. Subabul fed animals showed poor appetite, depressed growth rate, alopecia, loss of tail switch and inco-ordination of gait. The level of T3 and T4 in blood plasma decreased significantly indicating that the thyroid gland was also affected by feeding subabul with wheat straw. An extra peak of protein was observed in fast protein liquid chromatography of a molecule weight of 15-20 kd in the subabul fed animals group. This may be due to toxic principles of mimosine. Feeding subabul as 40 parts with 60 parts of wheat straw to growing calves produced toxic effects.
