In field trials in 1988 and 1989 on calcareous loamy clay soil, 10 sunflower hybrids at densities of 50 000 and 70 000 plants/ha were given 50 or 150 kg N, O, 30, 60 or 90 kg P2O5 and O, 60, 120 or 180 kg K2O/ha. Application of a basic 50 kg N followed by an additional 100 kg in spring increased achene yields slightly in some hybrids but the basic rate was considered sufficient. Average yields were 4.12 t achenes/ha and 1.89 t oil.
