Effect of growing method and soil type on leek yield and quality

In trials on podzolic clay and low peat soils between 1985 and 1987 with the cultivars Alaska, Nebraska, Jolant and Darkal, the seedlings were transplanted (1) 5 cm deep on flat ground, (2) as in (1) but earthed up twice (early July and early Aug.), (3) into 15-cm deep furrows filled with soil in early July, and (4) into 20-cm deep holes without filling. Seedlings for treatments (1) to (3) were 8 weeks old and for (4) they were 10 weeks old. Seeds had been sown in boxes on 17 Mar.
