The effects of gamma-HCH and phorate on yield, nutrient uptake, juice quality and commercial sugar in sugarcane were studied in the field in India during 1984. Following the application of lindane or phorate at 1 kg a.i./ha, yield was significantly increased with increase in nitrogen levels up to 120 kg/ha. Higher yields were obtained with lindane (60.09 tonnes/ha) than with phorate (56.76 tonnes/ha) at 120 kg nitrogen/ha.
