Effect of iron supplementation on artificially-reared lambs weaned at 14 days of age

From birth to 14 days old, 42 lambs in cages without bedding were fed on milk substitute (MR, 10 degrees -15 degrees C) ad libitum and injected with saline or iron 500 mg as iron dextran on day 3. In trial 1, 8 lambs were weaned abruptly on day 14 or onto a ground, high-quality starter diet (SD), and 8 lambs were bottle fed isoenergetic low levels of MR after day 14. In trial 2, 4 lambs were killed each on days 10 and 14, and 18 lambs were weaned onto dry SD on day 14.
