In 1988-89 trials, N was applied at 30, 60 or 90 kg/ha to plants spaced at 45 x 5, 45 x 10 or 45 x 15 cm. Maleic hydrazide (MH) at 0, 1000 or 2000 p.p.m. was applied on the 25th, 50th and 75th day after planting. The N rate was split with one-half applied at planting and the rest a month later.
