Sclerotia of R. oryzae-sativae, the stem and root rot pathogen of rice, survived >300 d in soil at 50% WHC under lab. conditions. In sun-dry soil (3% moisture), viability declined rapidly to zero in 135-150 d. In soil at saturation moisture levels, viability was 225-240 d. The effective survival periods at 3%, 50% and 100% WHC were 119, 269 and 158 d, respectively. These results may be attributed to the removal of sclerotial moisture by clay colloids and the activity of soil microbes.
