Effect of texture on storage and dynamics of organic matter in some ferruginous and ferrallitic soils (particularly in West Africa)

In some ferruginous and ferrallitic soils of West Africa, the West Indies and Brazil, organic matter (OM) content of cultivated and uncultivated soils was affected more by soil texture than by climate. Cultivation decreased OM content by 30 to 40% within 3 to 10 years, the decrease being more rapid in sandy soils. The forms of OM were different in sandy and in clay soils.
