Effect of weed control methods, cropping systems, plant population and soil fertility levels on nutrient removal and soil fertility status of maize fields

In field trials during 1979-90 at Palampur, Himachal Pradesh, on a sandy loam soil, control of weeds by hand weeding (HW) or pre-em. application of 1.5 kg/ha atrazine resulted in increased uptake of N, P and K by maize Vijay and soyabeans Lee; atrazine gave superior control and mineral uptake. The N, P and K available in soil after crop harvest increased with weed control, compared to unweeded plots.
