The role of the C:N ratio in influencing the thermophilic composting of solid wastes was investigated. Changes in the rate of carbon dioxide evolution, carbon conversion, pH, ammonia production rate, and microbial numbers were monitored. Three experimental runs with different C:N ratios showed significantly different time courses of these values. Rises in pH and large peaks in carbon dioxide and ammonia evolution rates occurred earliest at a C:N ratio of 22:4.
