Effects of sewage sludge on the growth and properties of eight-year-old Pinus taeda wood in the southeastern USA

Sludge was applied at 0, 402 and 804 kg/ha of nitrogen on plots of 2 different soil types. After 4 yr, vol. growth was increased 23% by the lower application of sludge and 33% by the higher application compared with control plots. The relative density of stemwood from trees treated at the high application was significantly lower than that from untreated trees (0.409 vs. 0.421). There was n.s.d. between wood from trees treated with low levels of sludge (0.412) and control trees.
