In field experiments at Admont (1969-87), Piber (1970-87), Bischofshofen (1970-87) and Gumpenstein (1962-87) in Austria, mixed grassland swards were cut 3-6 times/year and given 0, 30, 60, 90 and 120 kg N + PK after each cut. DM yields/year decreased progressively in plots given PK only; yields of 11-year old pastures were 35% of those of young (1-5 year old) pastures. In plots given N, DM yields after 11 years were only reduced by 11-21% compared with young pastures. N use efficiency was not influenced by stand age.
