Estimation of yield losses of grains caused by the shoot borer Diatraea lineolata Walker and the termite Heterotermes convexinotatus Snyder in the maize-sorghum system

Studies were carried out in El Salvador in 1988-89 to evaluate the damage caused by the pyralid Diatraea lineolata and Heterotermes convexinotatus in maize and sorghum and the effects on the yield of both crops of damage at different phenological stages. Volaton (phoxim) 2.5 G at 6.5 kg/ha was applied to the shoots and Volaton 500 EC at 0.75 litres/ha was applied to the leaf axils. In maize, damage by the pyralid was first observed 42-56 days after sowing.
