Nine parents and their 35 F1 and F2 progenies obtained from diallel mating [of Triticum aestivum,] were evaluated in field conditions under irrigated/normal (env I) and rainfed/stress (env II) environments for grain yield and its major components. Correlation coefficients between parental genetic divergence, heterosis and specific combining ability (SCA) effects were generally non-significant and inconsistent over environments. Also, frequency of transgressive segregants and level of transgression in F2 generation were independent of genetic divergence among parents and influenced by the environments. Crosses involving parents with moderate genetic divergence, good general combining ability (GCA) effects and high mean and depicting high SCA and mean in F1, yielded highest frequency and magnitude of transgression in F2 for grain yield. It is concluded that breeding behaviour of the crosses should be considered rather than relying only on divergence among parents.
