Germplasm transfer from the wild tetraploid species Solanum acaule Bitt. to the cultivated potato, S. tuberosum L. using 2n eggs

The S. acaule (acl, 2n = 4x = 49 and 2n = 6x = 72) tetraploid subspp. acaule and aemulans cannot be easily crossed with S. tuberosum group tuberosum (tbr, 2n = 4x = 48) owing to abnormal endosperm development in the hybrid seed. Since 4x acl behaves as a diploid in intraploidy and interploidy crosses, it was postulated that the hybridization barrier with tbr could be overcome if the wild species produced 2n gametes.
