Polyethylene glycol (PEG) was used in solution culture experiments to expose plants of 10 faba bean and 11 pea cultivars to defined levels of gradually increasing osmotic stress. Seedlings were treated at -4.8 -7.9 and -12.7 x 105 Pa, corresponding to mild, moderate and severe stress. Treated and control plants were harvested and analysed for growth, gas exchange, leaf water and osmotic potential, and ABA.
