Influence of rate and timing of nitrogen fertilization on yield and quality of hard red winter wheat in Ontario

Wheat Monopol in 1988 and Absolvent in 1989, grown on silt loams in S. Ontario, were given 40-240 kg N/ha applied 100:0:0, 75:25:0, 50:50:0 or 25:50:25% at Zadok's growth stages 22:32:45 (main shoot and 2 tillers: 1st node detectable: boots swollen). Early N application reduced grain yield in 1988 with below-average precipitation, increased grain yield in 1989 with average precipitation, and increased straw yield in both years.
