Different degrees of soil compaction were induced by passes with a small tractor on a sandy nursery soil in E. Germany, and the effects were determined of soil density and various applications of organic matter on the growth of Scots pine and Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii). Correlations were found between tractor passes and soil density down to a depth of 30 cm, and these are shown in a nomogram.
