Inheritance of permethrin resistance in the pink bollworm (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae)

A strain of pink bollworm, Pectinophora gossypiella (Saunders), collected from cotton fields in Yuma, Ariz., was found to be resistant to permethrin. The strain was then selected in the laboratory to increase the level of homogenity for mode-of-inheritance studies. The lines obtained for the reciprocal F1 hybrid progeny indicated that inheritance of permethrin resistance was autosomal and that there were no maternal effects. Degree of dominance (D) was estimated to be 0.37 and 0.31 for the two reciprocal F1 generations, S-female X R-male and R-female X S-male respectively, indicating that resistance is conferred by incompletely dominant gene(s). Chi-square analysis of responses of backcross progeny, suggested that resistance was conferred by a major gene under the influence of minor gene(s).
