Mating behavior and male mating success in wild Anastrepha ludens (Diptera: Tephritidae) on a field-caged host tree

Mating behavior and male mating success in wild Anastrepha ludens (Diptera: Tephritidae) on a field-caged host tree

Journal of Insect Behavior, 44: 471-487

Mating behaviour and factors affecting mating success of males were studied using wild Anastrepha ludens on a field-caged grapefruit tree in Texas. The most common courtship sequence had 5 components: male calling from the underside of a leaf; female arrival on the male-occupied leaf; male orientation to the female and stopping calling; the approach of one or both to a face-to-face position 1-3 cm apart; and mounting of the female by the male after 1-2 s.
