Although sheep farming declined in Austria in the postwar period, production of sheepmeat doubled to 4500 t in the period since 1970, mainly as the result of increased paddock farming in the eastern Lander. Some 62% of sheep are in mountain farms, about half of them part time, and are a very important source of income. The introductory paper reviews the general production, supply and demand situation and describes a pilot project to encourage production and promote marketing of quality lamb.
