In field trials near Piacenza in 1986-89, winter wheat Mec was given 0 or 118-131 kg N as ammonium nitrate during the winter. Total N uptake was greater with than without N fertilizer. N distribution between plant parts did not differ between fertilizer treatments. When the 1st node was visible, about 70% of plant N was in the leaves and the remainder in the stem. At anthesis, about 40% of N was in leaves, 40% in stems and 20% in spikes.
