Occurrence and predisposing factors of needle discolorations of European larch (Larix decidua Mill.) in the transition zone between the Erzgebirge and Saxon Switzerland

Yellowing of short-shoot needles was found in c. 9% of all 6-30-year-old L. decidua trees sampled in a large test area in S. Germany. Analysis of soil and needle samples suggested that the yellowing was due to a complex of causes including edaphic factors affecting tree nutrition, and eluviation from needles and soil, combined with extensive air pollution, each stressor being too weak itself to bring about the needle discoloration.
