Physiological and biochemical studies of polyamines which are covalently linked to peptidoglycan in anaerobic bacteria
Veillonella alcalescens has an absolute requirement for putrescine or cadaverine for growth. Putrescine and cadaverine are taken up into the cells out of the medium and are incorporated exclusively into the peptidoglycan. These diamines are confirmed to be an essential constituent of the peptidoglycan of this bacterium. V. parvula also proved to contain putrescine as a component of peptidoglycan.
