Physiological characters describing drought tolerance in Triticum: interpretation of the correlation between yield and carbon isotope composition of seeds

Proceedings, Second congress of the European Society for Agronomy, Warwick University, UK, 23-28 August 1992: 70-71
Physiological characters describing drought tolerance in Triticum: interpretation of the correlation between yield and carbon isotope composition of seeds
Wheat was grown with water stress applied at different growth stages, or with different plant organs removed at flowering. Correlations between yield and natural carbon isotope composition, delta 13C, in seeds were determined. High seed 13C content was associated with low yield, related to the high photosynthetic contribution of the ear during grain filling when leaves and stems became senescent during water stress.
