Physiological mechanisms of gastrointestinal P-metabolism and influence of deficient P-supply in small ruminants

Physiological mechanisms of gastrointestinal P-metabolism and influence of deficient P-supply in small ruminants
Phosphorus metabolism in ruminants is characterized by high endogenous salivary inorganic P secretion into the rumen which is balanced by net inorganic P absorption in the small intestine. The small intestine has been shown to be the major site for net inorganic P absorption, the mechanisms involved are unclear. Inorganic P may be absorbed across the forestomach wall by passive transport, but the proportion on the overall gastrointestinal inorganic P absorption is not known.
