Phytotoxicosis produced by ethanolic extract of the leaves of Bixa orellana Linn. in rats
Sprague-Dawley rats, 200-250 g, were given Bixa orellana leaf extract 0, 40, 80 or 120 mg/kg body weight daily for 7 days. Extract at 80 and 120 mg/kg significantly increased total red blood cell count and packed cell volume but did not significantly change leukocyte count or haemoglobin concentration. It produced hypoproteinaemia reflected in decreased albumin concentration and increased potassium, sodium and chloride concentrations.
