Population dynamics of bacteria for phosphorus removal in sequencing batch reactor (SBR) activated sludge processes

Population dynamics of bacteria for phosphorus removal in sequencing batch reactor (SBR) activated sludge processes

Water Science and Technology 23(4-6): 755-763

The accumulation of bacteria responsible for biological P removal was studied in lab.-scale sequencing batch reactor activated sludge processes. Particular attention was paid to the effects of sludge retention time and organic substrates present. Accumulation could not be enhanced in reactors operated with sludge retention time < 25 d, in spite of higher growth rates observed in isolated strs of P-accumulating bacteria.
