Poverty-oriented development strategies: a critique of the integrated rural development approach with special reference to World Bank programmes

Poverty-oriented development strategies: a critique of the integrated rural development approach with special reference to World Bank programmes

Kajian Malaysia 6(2): 42-64

This paper discusses the effectiveness of poverty-oriented integrated rural development strategies in combatting the problems of rural underdevelopment of Third World countries. These approaches were developed towards the end of the 1970s following the failure of past rural development programmes in the period 1960 to the mid-1970s. Even though these strategies are regarded as new, their ability to overcome the problems of rural underdevelopment is still doubtful.
