Relationships between root morphology of flooded pastures and PK uptake were studied at 6 sites. Results indicated that root morphology was likely to be an important competitive factor for water and nutrients in pastures. The success of the grasses appeared to be due to the root system morphology. In soils with seasonal retention of water, in the surface layer, grass roots had important advantages compared with legumes.
