In laboratory and field studies in Malaysia, there were significant variations in oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide evolution of Macrotermes carbonarius among soldiers and workers over a 10-h experimental period, suggesting that there was rhythmic respiratory behasviour despite the stressful situation of confinement at 29 degrees C in the laboratory.
