Salinity-induced accumulation of polyamines in germinating rice seeds differing in salt tolerance

Metabolic levels of the polyamines spermidine, spermine and agmatine and the diamine putrescine were determined in the endosperms and embryo axes of four rice cultivars of differing salt tolerance, germinating under increasing levels of NaCl salinity. Salinity caused a sharp increase in the level of total polyamines in the embryo axes, the effect being greater in the salt-sensitive cultivars Ratna and Jaya than in the tolerant cultivars CSR1 and CSR3.
